Transports’ carbon footprints to be displayed on the internet

Due to a new law originating from the Grenelle Environment Forum, the carbon footprints of train and plane journeys now have to be displayed. The law concerns the transport of goods as well as passengers, and will apply to road transport and shipping companies, to taxis and movers, but also to airline and railway companies. As for now, businesses will only display the amount of CO2 per kilometer. After July 1st, 2016, however, they will have to provide more detailed and tailored data.

Towards a collective awareness
French Ministries of Transport and Ecology stated that this measure “is the first step towards a better awareness of greenhouse gas emissions by travelers and loaders, which will lead them to the most environment-friendly solutions.”

How does it work?
When booking a train ticket, for instance, whether you do it via a self-service ticket machine or at the counter, you will know the amount of CO2 emitted during your journey, between the departure and arrival stations. The same goes for airline companies. A link will redirect you to a CO2 calculator, allowing you to know the amount of CO2 per passenger emitted during your flight. The criteria taken into account are the distance travelled, the type of plane and the flight conditions, such as the wind or any other weather condition.

Meanwhile, you can estimate your journey’s carbon footprint thanks to the Calculette Carbone Voyage (Carbon Journey Calculator).
