Exhibition: Japonisme et arts de la table

In response to its current exhibition “Kuniyoshi, le démon de l’estampe”, the Petit Palais displays around forty ceramics and engravings in these permanent collections. They reveal the influence of the culinary art in Japan, on the occasion of the second half of the XIX century. The public will admire two plates of the famous Service Rousseau wich made a splash during the Exposition universelle of 1867. By the way, it was the first example of “japonisme”, this term invented by art critic Philippe Burty, in the decorative arts. These two pieces have been given to the Petit Palais, which represents them for the first time. It is from 1853 that Japan opens itself progressively at the international trade. Europe is thus flooded with objects from the Land of the Rising Sun, as porcelains, lacquers, folding screens and fans, which little by little will exercise a real fascination on the artists at that time. This retrospective can be visited until January 17th 2016, a few underground stops from the Green Hotels Paris, the Eiffel Trocadéro and the Gavarni.
