Yarn bombing, when knitting becomes street art

Although the link between knitting and graffiti is not quite obvious at first, these two hobbies have found a way to go hand in hand, and from these two opposite activities is born a particularly original art, through which the cityscape is covered with a variety of knitwear suitable for all shapes. This phenomenon, known as "yard bombing", or urban kitting, a colorful and ephemeral art related to street art, has become largely popularized, and we behold the emergence of actual works of art, whose artists are more and more solicited worldwide. Trees, buses, cars, traffic signs, statues, benches... the entire city dons the colors of this art. Created in 2005 in Houston, Texas, yarn bombing was invented by American Magda Sayeg, now the figurehead of this authentic artistic movement imitated all over the world. It is in 2012, on the occasion of an urban art festival in Angers, that the first large-scale urban knitting work was created in France. The Collectif France Tricot (France Knitting Community) is a pioneer in this activity -which is illegal when not requested- whose primary goal is to trigger the bystanders' reaction, humanize impersonal public spaces, color the cities and put the smile back on city-dwellers' faces. Decorating cityscape elements is also a way to conceal it and get closer to nature in an original and aesthetically pleasing way!
