London – A Garden Bridge over Thames to be built
London is planning to build an innovative Garden Bridge over the River Thames. This green bridge will be the size of a football field and will feature 270 trees, wildflowers and shrubs. The final project has been approved on December 19th of 2014 by the Mayor of London, for an estimated cost of £175 million (€222 million). The construction will begin at the end of 2015 so that the bridge can be inaugurated by 2018. This pedestrian bridge was designed by architect Thomas Heatherwick – who also designed the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics Cauldron. This suspended garden will run from near the Southbank Centre to Temple station, and will provide meandering walkways to be used and enjoyed by all.
