Poplar shortage in France by 2020
Considering that the frequence of poplar planting has considerably decreased in France for the last few years, the Conseil National du Peuplier (Poplar National Council) has decided to sound the alarm and alerted the media. In the 1990s, France planted 2 million poplars per year, compared to only 600 000 in 2013! CNP vice-president Hervé Drouin explains that some towns "don't want to plant poplars because they may obstruate the landscapes and displace the meadows". In a country as gourmet as France, people start to worry. Poplar wood is used, among other things, to make vegetable crates, oyster hampers and camember boxes. The food-processing industry may have to change its packagings and to adopt plastic as a raw material, because it seems that from here to 2020, France will face a poplar shortage.
