In the footsteps of Roger Vivier

The Palais de Tokyo is presenting an exhibition on the famous shoemaker Roger Vivier. Internationally renowned for his work-of-art shoes, he began his career during the 1930s. This new retrospective displays 140 pairs of shoes, some of which are made even more sublime thanks to Maison Lesage embroideries. Roger Vivier saw the shoe as a piece of sculpture: “Lines have always enthralled me. I’ll resketch my drawing five hundred times to check the exactness of the idea and respect the foot’s architecture.” He designed avant-gardist heels, such as the “Virgule” (comma heel) and the “Choc”, until creating his own label in 1963. In the 1950s, he was the only one who could write his name near Yves-Saint-Laurent’s during his shows.

Roger Vivier

A shoemaker for the most beautiful women in the world
Roger Vivier’s shoes have be worn by the most prestigious women, from Elizabeth Taylor and Catherine Deneuve to Marlene Dietrich and Brigitte Bardot. He even designed shoes for the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. Since then, under the impetus of Bruno Frisoni, who became Creative Director for Maison Roger Vivier in 2002, the design label has developed its reputation as a luxury accessories designer house, a symbol of Parisian chic reinforced by the choice of former model Inès de la Fressange as an ambassador. Today, Roger Vivier’s shoes are still worn by the most beautiful women in the world, like Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway.
