A third of Paris soon limited at 18 miles
The Mairie de Paris announced the creation of new areas limited at 18 miles in 11 districts of the capital, in January 2016. Indeed, the speed will be limited in 4 districts of the city center (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) until the boulevard Saint-Germain (5th), as well as the 11th, 12th and 20th. Others areas will be created in the 8th, 13th and 17th. This is the fisrt step of the objectif Ville 30 which wishes to make Paris a city wholly limited at 18 miles from now until 2020. Road markings, cycle lanes against the flow of traffic, traffic lights for bikes, signs…107 miles of streets will be thus transformed. Rivoli, Réaumur and Sébastopol will stay at 31miles. At l’Ile-Saint-Louis, new meeting zones between pedestrians and cars will be set up on the smallest routes already limited at 12 miles. “For us this plan contributes to make the town more pacified, with a better cohabitation between pedestrians and cars, less noise and a decrease of the traffic” claims EELV deputy (Europe Ecology-The Greens) Christophe Najdovski, in charge of the transports, in the newspaper Le Parisien. He hopes to reach 50% of the town at 18 miles, at the end of 2016.
