Calling all fans of beautiful photographs! The Musée de l'Armée offers you to discover an exhibition about works by photojournalist Philippe de Poulpiquet called Invalides : Mémoires de Guerres. First expected to open from September 19, 2020 to January 3, 2021, the new lockdown changed things and the museum has had to review its organization. Eventhough the exhibition is extended to February 28, 2021, the museum remains closed until further notice.

An exhibition giving pride of place to the history of the monument, as a hospital and a center where “were welcome and cured veterans, wounded militaries in external missions, civil war-victims or terror-attack victims, as well as civil injured”.

On the museum’s demand, Philippe de Poulpiquet followed between summer 2017 and summer 2018 the daily lives of doctors, nurses, nurses’ aides, and other healthcare providers working there. Built like a photographic chronicle, the exhibition “follows people who make the place live: veterans wounded in battle during decolonization or the war in Afghanistan, civils victim of terror attacks, hospital staff, military authority…” The idea is to tell the story of these men and women who became “the wounded flesh of a country marked by the scars of the war”.

All in all, 75 photographs are displayed, evolving around two different tours to discover within the Hôtel des Invalides:

  • A first indoor tour presenting “original prints, produced in 2019 for the photograph collections of the museum, within the rooms of the Armes et Armures anciennes du Musée de l’Armée tour
  • A second outdoor tour, self-guided, presenting “enlarged reproductions, printed and plywooded on special panels, in the northern moats along the main entrance of the Hotel, by the Esplanade des Invalides and on the grates all along the Boulevard des Invalides”.

The occasion to discover jobs at the Hôtel des Invalides and pay tribute to the entire healthcare providers on the frontline during the coronavirus crisis… Let’s go, friends, shall we?
