Paris, after confinement, the return of air pollution
No more birdsong heard in the French capital, pollution has returned. According to data published on Wednesday by the Energy and Air Quality Research Center (Crea), an international organization based in Finland, Paris is the European metropolis where nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations are highest. more exploded with deconfinement: + 118% compared to the average of the thirty days of confinement when the figures were at their lowest.
During the containment phase, NO2 concentrations had decreased by 60% in Paris compared to the same period of 2017, 2018 and 2019.
Brussels, Milan and Munich more polluted in absolute terms
This return of pollution is observed in all the major cities of Europe hit by the Covid-19 epidemic. + 88% in Brussels, + 74% in Oslo, + 73% in Milan. The gap in the French capital is due to a greater reduction in NO2 concentrations in previous years, underlines the study (-60% compared to the same period of 2017, 2018 and 2019). Brussels, Milan and Munich have a higher absolute nitrogen dioxide concentration level than Paris.
