Effective Living Walls, Even Indoors


Green facades provide insulation and cool down the surrounding area of a building.
In addition to the much welcomed green touch it brings to urban landscapes, and the freshness and new homes for biodiversity they provide to the city, these “vertical gardens” also contribute to the buildings' insulation. According to a study by the University of Plymouth (United Kingdom), they can reduce heat loss by about 30 %.
But the advantages of living walls can also be experienced… indoors. Finnish researchers have observed that living in a building with green walls – including philodendrons, dragos, and ferns – balances the human skin microbiome, diversifying the microorganisms living on the surface of the body.
