Exhibition: White Man, Black Man

Until next October 8th, the musée du quai Branly is interested in the perception of the white man by the black man. Thanks to around a hundred photographs and items—for the most part never displayed in France—the public discovers what is called the ‘colonial’ art. The ‘White Man/Black Man. Representations of Westerners in 20th Century African Art’ exhibition enables to know more about the history of the two continents represented by Africa and Europe, and this through art. For example, visitors learn that even if the West imposed its view to the World, European ambassadors were too mocked and criticised or on the contrary, admired by the inhabitants in Western Africa, and this as soon as the 15th century. That is when they assimilated the figure of this foreigner with pale complexion in their artistic creation.

Exhibition ‘White Man/Black Man. Representations of Westerners in 20th Century African Art’, from June 15th to October 8th, 2016.
Open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm.
Closed on Mondays.
Full rate: €9 / Reduced rate: €7.
