In British-Columbia, in Canada, scientists have observed that bees were  committing suicide when extreme heat became unbearable. Therefore, in order to avoid this, scientists started to try and find a means of cooling the bee-hives. One of the methods consists in isolating the hives by adding a polystyrene lid. With this method, the bee-hives remain 3,5 °C cooler than the control group of hives. This isolation could also allow to maintain temperature more constant, « the hives remain warmer at night and cooler during the day, with the result that it could be used to protect the bees from cold in winter and from death in summer », relates Ouest France.
