Exhibition: Jean-Michel Basquiat

This end of year, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is spoiling us. In addition to the exhibition devoted to Egon Schiele, it offers us a second retrospective dedicated to the American painter of Haitian descent Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). The one that started out on the streets of New York City and has seen a meteoric rise. At an early age, he quickly became friends with Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, going so far as to collaborate with them. His art is characterised by the use of symbols (crown, skull), primitive figures, numbers and scientific formulas. Jean-Michel Basquiat also uses different materials and techniques (acrylic, silkscreen printing, markers, sprays). His works range from drawing to painting, to the collage of photocopies. This major painter of the 20th century is the one that the Parisian museum celebrates, unveiling 135 works produced between 1980 and 1988, in a chronological journey that extends over 2500m2. The exhibition also reveals little-known creations, such as the paintings “Offensive Orange” (1982), “Untitled (Boxer)” (1982) and “Untitled (Yellow Tar and Feathers)” (1982). It is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the work of this artist who passed away too early at the age of 28, a few metro stations away from the Green Hotels Paris, the Eiffel Trocadéro and the Gavarni.
