Being eco-citizen at home

September 9th, 2008 by admin

Following the advice of the Gavarni Hotel to be eco-citizen at work, you are now ready to act at home!

At home: it maintains a temperature below 19°C, which allows energy savings of 7%. Ideally, you should sleep in a room at 16°C and the rest of your apartment or your house should be 19°C. But for persons having some problems with numbers, invest in a thermostat that will allow you to adjust the temperature according to your presence.
Finally, remember to insulate well in order not to lose that stupid energy you consume. The best is yet to close your shutters, your curtains and double your curtains!

In the garden: stop watering your lawn. After all, we must face facts: if you live in Aix-en-Provence, no more dreaming, your lawn will never be as sweet as the green pastures of Normandy.
You wonder what is the hype summer sport? Use a hand mower!
It does not spend energy so it does not pollute.
Obviously we get the rain water for domestic purposes: watering, washing the car or the dog.

In short, being eco-citizen is not so complicated as that, you just give yourself the means.

World Earth Festival

June 3rd, 2008 by admin

The World Earth Festival invites each of us to become a player in protecting the environment. It was launched in 2004 by Terralliance. Its aim is to provide nations worldwide with an opportunity to celebrate the planet together and at the same time, raise awareness of how fragile it is and commit to protecting it.

In France, the celebration will take place from June 13-15 at the Parc de Bercy, with a special emphasis on the two key issues which led to the Festival being set up: solidarity and the environment. During this three-day event, over 6000 visitors are expected at the Parc for a number of events: an “association village” with 50 exhibitors, topical lectures, exhibitions, interactive workshops and a score or so of concerts featuring music from around the world. These events will take place daily from 10am to 10pm and will be completely free of charge.

What’s the air like in Paris ?

May 15th, 2008 by admin

Do you find the air’s better in the country than in major cities such as Paris? From now on, there’s a balloon to inform you about air quality in the capital.

The balloon has been moored in the André-Citroen park for some years now and has become a landmark in southern Paris. It’s continuing to fulfil its initial vocation – that of taking on board passengers so they can experience the fun of going up in the air.
From now on, however, it will also be providing information about the air quality in Paris: red means bad, green means good.

The André-Citroen park balloon will be visible for up to almost 40km.

Ballon du parc Andre Citroen

This display will work using two separate lighting systems:
- for air quality in areas close to traffic, a system of light-emitting diodes (visible night and day) will be arranged around the lower part of the balloon,

- for the city’s ambient air quality, there will be a system lighting up the whole of the balloon using colour bulbs located on the inside (which will be more visible at night).

It will thus be possible for air quality indications based on the levels of pollution in general and close to traffic recorded by the Airparif network’s monitoring stations to vary independently of each other.

An information and exhibition area which is both fun and educational will also be installed at the foot of the balloon to explain to younger Parisians how people’s everyday behaviour affects air quality.

This will enable Paris schools to continue to familiarise their pupils with the pleasures of the aérostation free of charge, at the same time as introducing them to the issue of air quality in Paris.

A walk along the banks of the Seine River

April 29th, 2008 by admin

Pleasure-boating really took off here in 1983, when the Paris Arsenal marina was set up on the Saint-Martin Canal.
In addition, with the increasing number of cycle paths in Paris, it is now possible to travel by bike between the Seine and the Ourcq canal by following the route of the Saint-Martin Canal from the Bastille.
This involves taking the Boulevard Henri IV, crossing the place de la Bastille, taking the boulevards Richard-Lenoir and Jules-Ferry, then cycling alongside the above-ground section of the Saint-Martin Canal along the Quai de Jemmapes and the Quai de Valmy.
From the Rotonde de la Villette, the route continues along the Quai de la Loire and the Quai de la Marne, from where you can ride directly onto the Canal de l’Ourcq cycle paths.

The first cycle paths, created on the Canal de l’Ourcq towpath in 1978, were a resounding success. A new phase of cycle routes are currently being laid out along the Canal de l’Ourcq, extending the existing route as far as the Jablines leisure park and along the Saint-Denis Canal towards the Stade de France.
These routes link up with Parisian cycle tracks, enabling the region’s inhabitants to explore a very special natural environment.
