Totum: ancient food from America

March 30th, 2009 by admin

Totum is the store of two lovers who are working against junk food and for ecology. This old-fashion decorated store, offers products from the Americas (north, south and center).
The benefits of these ancient products are well-known; they provide all the vitamins, minerals and proteins necessary for the proper functioning of our body. We discover, for example, the purple corn, known since the Moche civilization who has already consumed it 2500 years ago. This unknows corn is still used in Peru, where it is prepared as a dessert or a soft drink.
If you do not know what to buy, do not hesitate to ask advice to owners who will be happy to assist and introduce you to each of their products.

Open from Tuesday to Saturday from noon until 8pm.

The slow design

March 25th, 2009 by admin

After the slow food movement born in Italy in 80’s against junk food and fast food culture, the slow design appeared in the past few years. The slow design is the decorative eco-ethic that everybody talks about now-a-days. Issued by Alastair Fuad-Luke, an English academic, this new trend has quickly attracted designers and contemporary artists of our century. In 2004 the movement appeared to produce green decorative facing the standardized objects governed by the laws of mass production.

slow-design
Like any movement, the slow design has its values and principles. First, items from the slow design are opposed to the idea of quick industrialization and manufacturing, they are unique or produced in limited series, and especially handmade. The manufacturing technique is simple and natural processes are used. They are made from recycled materials or materials from sustainable or fair trade. Among the famous designers and representative of the movement is the collective 5.5 Designers, three young designers who are known by recycling everyday objects to create a design full of humor.

Natural products in your bathroom

Shower and bath
Mix vinegar with lemon juice, it removes moisture from the edges of showers and bathtubs. You can also mix it with baking soda that enhances efficiency.
For the tub you can soak all towels in vinegar and spread on the walls of the tub (leave them in place long enough) if it has stains – or if it is an old bathtub – sprinkle baking soda and leave it then rub and rinse.
You can also pour boiled vinegar on the stain and then use a sponge, it will shine!
To clean shower doors plastic (polycarbonate), use a sponge with a few drops of lemon, or half a lemon a little old, it works!
For the glass walls, use diluted soap, then rinse and dry with a paper soaked in vinegar to remove all traces of soap.

Toilet, sink and pipes
The vinegar also disinfects the toilet and bathroom and descales cups, sinks and bathtubs. You can add a drop of lemon for smell. Once a week, it is advisable to clean your pipes in your sink by pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Use it to clean your stainless steel sink: they will be bright as ever.
For the sink, sprinkle a mixture of 2 large spoons of bicarbonate and 2 large spoons of salt, brush with an emphasis on scoring and grid evacuation. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and finally wipe with a damp white vinegar tissue.

To buy better and consume less, here’s an interesting and useful site that will help you in your interior. Published by a Belgian company, it offers products that last in time, preserving our environment. On the website, there are low consumption bulbs, solar panels, maintenance products organic and sustainable gifts. Two products have caught our attention: the portable solar charger Li Ion, which offers the possibility to recharge any device with a USB port, and intelligent battery charger, which allows the regeneration of disposable batteries.

Thanks to its load at a constant current pulse, the battery charger recharges all battery format. With its LCD display, you know immediately what is recharging. Three colors help you identify: red, the batteries are charging, green, the batteries are recharged, and orange, they uncharged. This device contains up to 8 slots for round cells, and 2 locations for 9V batteries. A website that shows us that modern life, technology and ecology can be reconciled.

Ekyog: green Brittany fashion

March 16th, 2009 by admin

Established in 2003, Ekyog is an eco-chic brand of clothing that has its origins in Brittany. The collections are based on the “be sweet”. Ekyog offers clothing designed like a second skin: soft materials, fluidity and freedom of movement. The autumn-winter collection 2009 is full or romance with puff sleeves and jabots. The fabrics are light, fluid and vapor. Concerning the colors, Ekyog has a dark range of colors from black to purple and blue. On the very well designed website, there are explanations on their choice of fabrics. We learn for example that if you can not find corn and soybeans, it is simply because of the risk of being faced with GMs. Ekyog doesn’t offer only clothes, the brand has diversified and offers organic cosmetics, a cleanser that has the effect of sweet foam. Also available, a child collection ranging from 0 to 2 year-old.

A second life for our clothes and our furniture

March 13th, 2009 by admin

To sort clothes or books is a good thing if you know where the to throw. Because before cluttering the dump next door to you, think about the associations that will be happy to collect and redistribute to those in need. Gavarni gives you the best ideas for an ecofriendly sort.

Books and magazines
Think of your local library before throwing in the trash books and magazines. She/he will be delighted to see her stock rise, often with a limited budget to buy new books. Otherwise, there are still associations like Secours Populaire, which recovers novels, history books and biographies. Finally, think about Boulinier or Gibert Jeune Saint-Michel, who buy your books (often for a few euros).

Furniture and electrical equipment
Created by an individual who could not stand the individualism of our consumer society, recupe.net you can make a list of objects that you want to separate and put online. Then, if someone is interested, he will contact you directly by email. A relatively simple website to use.

Toys
For next Christmas think of the toy store La Grande Récré which organizes from October to December collecting toys, which are then redistributed to local associations. At the entrance of the store, you will find a great hood where you just have to drop toys, stuffed animals and board games that you no longer wish to keep. Otherwise, you can also improve the lives of children and adolescents in hospital, by giving your toys to “Animation Loisirs à l’hospital.”

Hardware
Your computer is dead? Think of the association Jeunes Espoirs 2000 which retrieves the hardware and give it a second life. Otherwise, ask the store where you purchased your computer, they often recycle it.
